About Us

History

RBANM’s First Grade College was established by RBANM’s Educational Charities in the year 1983 to cater to the educational needs of the fast growing modern and tech city of Bangalore. This is one of the institution established under the umbrella of the RBANM’s Educational Charities founded 150th years ago in 1873 by Dharmarathnakara Rai Bahadur Arcot Narrainswamy Mudaliar. Our founder embarked on his vision of social regeneration, providing for all classes and castes in the fields of education, social welfare and religion. The institution is the fulfilment of the vision of its founder. In the three decades of service RBANM's FGC has made significant progression in education.

A student’s achievement is largely due to the culture at home. Respect, humility, honesty, sincerity, loyalty and citizenship to our institution, family and country is fundamental. Student’s pride for their Institution is highly correlated to their attitude towards their teachers.

At RBANM’s Institution we strongly believe that all children are born equal. We also believe that each one is blessed with a special talent. Students attitudes and habits at home and institution environments combine in unique ways to shape your personality and enable you to realize your full potential. Parents, the institution and you will have to work in harmony to make you the best that you can become

In all RBANM’s Institution we want a partnership between the institution and the parents to make sure that all children can realize their true potential. The system in our institutions enable our teachers to take children under their wing and through our curricular and extra-curricular programmes transform them into capable and responsible citizens of our country.

Founder

Dharmarathnakara Rai Bahadur Arcot Narrainsawmy Mudaliar (1827-1910)

Sri Narrainsawmy Mudaliar was born on May 14, 1827 in Arcot, which belonged to the Madras Presidency. Sri Narrainsawmy Mudaliar’s early years were full of struggle and trial. He lost his father at an early age and had shouldered the responsibility of a large family.

He did not have the opportunity to study English language, so he studied and acquired a deep knowledge of ancient sacred Tamil literature which helped in moulding his character. Soon after his marriage when he shifted to Bengaluru, he started vegetable and salt business. His hard work and perseverance paid off and later he started a furniture shop in the year 1852. Although he led a simple life he was known as a charitable man who always helped the poor. The Delhi Assembly of royals recognized his service to the poor and honored him with a title “Rai Bahadur‟.

Sri Narrainsawmy Mudaliar expanded his business and took up construction contracts. He bagged a partnership contract for the construction of Attarakacheri (eighteen offices). Presently the High Court is housed in that building. This was his major achievement and this earned him a large fortune and the sobriquet “Merchant prince of Bengaluru‟. His services were duly acknowledged by the Maharaja of Mysore who gifted him 400 acres of land in Bengaluru and Mysore, all of which was later lost in land reform laws. Though he himself was not educated, he knew the value of education so he started a charitable institution for poor Hindu boys. He started two Thirukulathar institution for the Dalith, one in cantonment and another in Ulsoor way back in 1875.

He also realized the importance of education for girls in those days and started a girl’s institution in 1886 in Ulsoor, named after his wife Smt. Govindammal. He also started a technical institution with surveying, drawing, and other commercial subjects which faded away after engineering colleges came into existence in 1923. His furniture shop flourished around the same time and earned the honor of Maharaja Sri Chamarajendra Wodeyar’s visit in 1892 and since then the shop was known to people as “Mysore Maharaja Hall‟. Sri Narrainsawmy Mudaliar was honored with the title “Dharmaratnakara‟ in 1894. Sri Narrainsawmy Mudaliar realized the importance of education and institutioning for the women and the weaker sections of society, at a time when their welfare was never considered significant.

He formed a charitable trust with family members and appointed a Brahmin and some government officials on the board so that it could be managed without “bias”. Now his great grandson Sri. A. A. Sanjeev Narrain as Secretary and Sri. A. M. Sashindar Narrain as Treasurer is looking after the trust. RBANM’s Educational Charities has many institutions under its banner from primary to post graduation level, because of the selfless and dedicated services rendered by successive presidents, secretaries and trust board members. The high institution was the first institution under the RBANM’s banner and is about 147 years old. We are all proud to be the members of this huge family called RBANM’s “the grand old institution‟.

Principal's Desk

Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,

I am pleased to address you as the Principal of RBANMS First Grade College. I want to take this opportunity to share my thoughts and insights about our college and the vision we have for the future.

Firstly, I am grateful for the warm welcome and support I have received since joining RBANMS First Grade College. The experience in the education sector has been nothing short of fantastic for me. Education gives us a unique opportunity to shape future leaders, entrepreneurs, and change managers. We contributed to the development of our students and our nation.

As a leader, my philosophy revolves around aligning and inspiring all stakeholders towards a common goal. I believe in participative leadership, where faculty members and students actively make decisions. We can nurture creativity, innovation, and a shared sense of purpose by fostering a collaborative environment.

Undoubtedly, the challenges professors face is multifold, and RBANMS First Grade College is no exception. We must adapt to a rapidly changing educational landscape, where knowledge constantly evolves. Staying updated with the latest advancements, innovating new pedagogies, and establishing meaningful connections with students is critical. Additionally, extensive research and publication are essential to remain relevant as professionals in our respective fields.

Drawing upon my experience as the Director of various B-Schools, including IIM Bengaluru, ISB&M and Jain University, I bring a broad perspective to RBANMS First Grade College. I have had the privilege of interacting with talented individuals and witnessing the big picture. This insight allows me to foresee our students’ challenges and the skills they need to acquire to become future leaders. It dramatically facilitates my interaction with students and empowers me to guide them effectively.

At RBANMS First Grade College, we take immense pride in our strong placement department and the excellent placement opportunities available to our students. By actively involving students in the placement process, we empower them to build relationships with corporate executives and make formal presentations. The energy and enthusiasm they bring to this process are invaluable in pushing the boundaries and achieving remarkable results.

Leadership is not something that can be postponed for the future; it is something that needs to be embraced today. As such, I encourage students to take ownership of their growth and be accountable for their actions. I aim to establish relationships with students by being one of them, participating in their activities, and engaging in informal interactions. These relationships go a long way in challenging and motivating students to strive for greatness and unleash their true potential.

Creating an ideal college environment is paramount to our success. While marketing is the heart of the business, students specialising in marketing must understand the dynamics of other functions. I encourage students to have an open mind, be willing to explore and learn, and develop the ability to connect with people from diverse backgrounds. These qualities will not only make them effective marketers but also well-rounded professionals.

Looking ahead, RBANMS aspires to stand out as a unique institution that develops leaders with a different approach. Our students should be continuously employable, socially responsible citizens with a global orientation and a drive to bring about positive change. Our goals for the coming years revolve around creating an environment that fosters innovation, experimentation, and a passion for making a difference.

In conclusion, I am honoured to be a part of RBANMS First Grade College and excited about the journey we are embarking on together. Let us work collaboratively to inspire and empower our students to achieve their dreams and contribute meaningfully to society.

Best Regards
Dr. Chetan Bajaj
